This is the file README of the T2 package.


1. To install the LaTeX2e support files of the new standard cyrillic
   font encodings (X2, T2A, T2B, T2C) and various cyrillic input
   encodings, first run LaTeX or Plain TeX on the file cyrlatex.ins:
   `latex cyrlatex.ins'.  This will generate the encoding definition
   files ({x2,t2a,t2b,t2c}enc.def), input encoding definition files
   (all other *.def), font definition files (*.fd) and a file
   textmath.ltx.

   To finish the installation you have to move the following files
   into a directory searched by TeX:

      All *.fd and *.def files and textmath.ltx.

   (until the T2 package is not a part of the of the official LaTeX,
   a good place for these files in TDS is $TEXMF/tex/latex/t2).
   Actually, it is sufficient to copy only those encoding definition
   files and font definition files which you will use, and only those
   of input encoding definition files which you will need to use with
   inputenc package (see their descriptions in the cyinpenc.dtx).
   To produce the documented source listing of the T2 package, run
   LaTeX on the *.dtx and *.fdd files.

   The latest version of the LH fonts package (v3.20) which supports
   X2, T2A, T2B, T2C standard Cyrillic TeX font encodings (and also
   some other encodings: LCY, OT2, and others) is available at

   (note that the X2 encoding does not contain latin letters, and therefore
   it may be more convenient to use T2* encodings in your documents).

   The T2 package is available at

2. Please install at least LaTeX2e release 1997/12/01, because in
   previous releases an additional token (\relax) was produced under
   some circumstances (e.g., if you use \MakeUppercase) which
   prevented kerning between inputenc-generated characters.  Some
   other bugs are fixed there as well as a lot of new nice features
   added. :-)

   Please apply a patch `array.diff' to the `array.sty' package from
   LaTeX `tools' bundle, if you are using that package. Hopefully, the
   December 1998 release of LaTeX will include this patch.

   Note that the \inputencoding macro should not be used in a
   horizontal mode (e.g. inside a paragraph).

3. The file citehack.sty redefines some of the LaTeX commands in order
   to make it possible to use Russian letters as arguments of \cite
   and \bibitem commands (it is not specific to the T2 package; the
   same problems would arise if one will try to use characters defined
   via the inputenc package as labels or notes of \cite and \bibitem
   commands).  Put this file into a directory searched by TeX, and put
   `\usepackage{citehack}' before `\begin{document}'.  It also makes
   it possible to use inputenc-generated characters in \label and \ref
   arguments.

   This is a temporary hack.  Hopefully, the corresponding commands will
   be corrected in the next release of LaTeX2e.

   The `cite' package should also be corrected to avoid the same bugs.
   If you are using the `cite' package, apply the patch `cite.diff' to
   the file `cite.sty' (or do this manually).  To use `cite' package,
   say `\usepackage{citehack}' before `\usepackage{cite}'.  If you
   want to use other files from the `cite' package (like
   overcite.sty), you should make a similar changes to them, too.

   The patch `etc/amsclass.diff' corrects the \uppercasenonmath
   command used in AMS-LaTeX package (it is against amsclass.dtx
   version 1.2r).  The original version has problems with the inputenc
   package and LaTeX uppercase-lowercase translation mechanism (it
   will be corected in the next release of AMS-LaTeX).  You should
   regenerate the class files by running `latex amsclass.ins'.

   The patch `etc/fancyvrb.diff' corrects the `fancyvrb' (and `fvrb-ex')
   package to work correctly with inputenc. However, your TeX should
   be able to output 8-bit characters to files (not converting them
   to ^^-notation) for this to work. Web2c-7.2 (teTeX-0.9) and emTeX
   are able to do this (you should set a locale which declares 8-bit
   characters as `printable').

   Read a `README' file in the `etc/rubibtex' directory if you are
   using bibtex; read a `README' file in the `etc/rumkidx' directory
   if you are using makeindex.

4. Read the file example1.tex.  It contains examples of using
   different Cyrillic font encodings and input encodings in LaTeX.

5. The file plainenc.tex provides a preliminary support for an input
   encoding mechanism for Plain TeX.  It is intended to use the
   standard *unmodified* LaTeX files: inputenc.sty, font encoding
   definition files (such as x2enc.def), and input encoding definition
   files (koi8-r.def, cp866.def, etc).

   The file example2.tex contains an example of using different font
   encodings in Plain TeX.  See also a file example3.tex which shows
   another way to process Plain TeX files---using the `plain' package
   for LaTeX.

   See also the `cyrplain' directory which contains files which can be
   used to create rusified Plain TeX based formats (except hyphenation
   patterns, which can be found in a separate `ruhyphen' package).

6. You need also Russian hyphenation patterns (set up for T2 encoding;
   note: by `T2' we mean here one of X2, T2A, T2B or T2C encodings),
   which you can find in a `ruhyphen' package at
   CTAN:language/hyphenation/ruhyphen/ and also at
   ftp://ftp.vsu.ru/pub/tex/ruhyphen.tar.gz
   The `ruhyphen' package contains five different russian patterns,
   and a support for re-encoding to any font encoding (not only to
   T2), and also additional patterns for the letter cyryo.

7. To install the russian support for BABEL (with X2 and T2*), please
   do the following:

   1) Get the latest BABEL distribution
      (CTAN:macros/latex/packages/babel).
   2) Replace (russian-related) files in the BABEL distribution with
      the files from the `rusbabel' directory.
   3) Reinstall BABEL: `latex babel.ins', and copy all the generated
      files into your texmf tree (replacing old files).
   4) Edit the file language.dat (see the sample `language.dat'
      in the ruhyphen package), selecting the needed languages and
      hyphenation patterns, and regenerate the LaTeX format file:
      `initex latex.ltx'.
